The Information of John Pitt< no role > , Servant to Mr. Akerman
the Keeper of the Goal of Newgate who, being on Oath,
saith that on Tuesday the sixth day of this Instant June
about seven O'Clock in the Evening,he observeda great
Mob of people assembled in a riotous and tumultuous
manner in the Old Bailey before the sd Goal of Newgate,
that after the Goods of Mr. Akerman had been taken out of
his House and were burning, George Sims< no role > the prisoner
now under Examinations with a great Number of other
persons unknown, in a very riotous manner came before the
great Gates of Newgate , some with Sledge Hammers,
some ofthemwithgreatlays Sticks; the said George Sims< no role > having
a large Stick in his Head, that the said George Sim,
and the other Riotors demanded there Gates to be
opened, swearing that if the Gates were not opened
they would break them down, that this Informant
was in the inside of there Gates during all this
time; says that the Mob began to beat against the
Gate, with their Hammers, & had proceeded to break the
Hatch before the Gates when he called to the prisoner
Sims by his Name, and said, "very will George I shall
mark you in particular", on which the said prisoner
left the Mob then and went towards Mr Akerman's
House, and this Informant saw him no more, says
that in a few Minutes after this the Goods of Mr
Akerman were set on Fire, and afterwards in the same Evening, his dwelling
House and then the Goal were on Fire, and in a great
measure destroyed.
