of October last , the person now present who calls
himself by ye Name of Isaac Ewell< no role > Sent him
with the Note of Bill of Exchange now produced
to Messrs Richd & Thos Woodwards< no role > Edward in Exchange Ally
to receive £130. pounds due thereon, but the Said
Bill being Suspected to be CounterfeitMby Mr.
Woodwards Servants & himself Mr. Woodward went
with this Informt. to ye sd Isaac Ewell & detained the
Sd Note till he had writ to Comadore Cavindish to know
whether it was a true Bill of Exchanges, the sd
Comadore Cavindish being the Drawer of ye Sd Bill of
Exchange which in made payable to Thomas
Smith or bearer

Oath that he Stept the Bill of Exchange produced
& Went with ye Porter to ye sd Isaac Ewell who owned he
delivered the Same to ye Porter, & Pretended he had [..]
from Tho Smith< no role > (to whom it is made payable) at
Portsmouth Alledging ye sd Smith was Chief Clerk
of ye Kings Rope Yard at Portsmouth, and further
Says that Suspecting the Sd Bill to be Counterfeit
did detain & has writ to Comodore Cavendish ye
prohended & drawer, Who has in his answer Satisfied
this Informt. that ye sd Bill is Counterfeit which
this Dept verily believes is Counter feil & forged
