of March 1784
Who on their Oath say and first the said Stephen Gaynon< no role >
says that
this Afternoon between 5 & 6 o'Clock he saw two persons now present
who call themselves Thomas Smith< no role >
and John Stephens< no role >
pass up
and down before said Robert Husseys< no role >
Shop That presently he
observed said Stephens take a Knife out of his Pocket open it,
and therewith cut a String which confined some Cotton under the
Stall-board of Said Mr. Hussey's Shop, and then go away, as well
as said Smith, who was in Company with him. That this Informant
apprized said Mr. Hussey of what he had seen and desired him
to be on his Guard. That in a Short time said Smith & Stephens
returned again, when Informant observed said Stephens take two
Pieces of Cotton from the Place where he had before cut the
String, and put them into said Smith Apron; whereupon
this Informant called out "Stop Theif" & they were Secured, this
Informant having first sun said Smith drop said Cotton,
And the said Robert Hussey< no role >
says that upon the Cry of "Stop Thief"
this Informant ran out and saw said Smith running away with
the two Pieces of Cotton, now produced that this Informant pursued
him, saw him drop said Cotton, and caused him to be Socured
And the said John Furneaux< no role >
Says that he Searched said John
Stephens< no role >
when he was Secured, and found the Knife now produced
in his Jacket pocket.
