The Information of Robert Stephenson< no role > , One of the Watchmen of the Parish of
St. James within the Liberty of Westminster and County of Middlesex taken upon Oath
before us Two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said County this
Seventh Day of November 1769.

This Informant being upon his Oath Saith that on Wednesday Morning about
two o'Clock of the first Day of November Instant 1769 as he was going to cry that
Hour he was coming past the Door of Lord Vane's in Argylle Buildings he saw Mr. John
Gascoign
< no role > coming out of Lord Vane's House. That the said John Gascoign< no role > Slapt the door
of Lord Vanes after him at coming out which made this informant him himself about
to see what was the Matter, and As he Saw and well knew the said John Gascoign< no role >
he stopped to talk with him during which time he Saw Three Men come out of the
Dwelling House of Mrs. Winford in Argylle Buildings, which is the next Door to the
said Lord Vane's. This Informant said to Mr Gascoign there are three Men come
out of Mrs. Winfords; the said John Gascoign< no role > then said that they must be Theives
the said three men this Informant Saw come out of Mrs. Winfords House and they
did not stay a Moment but run away as fast as they could, and left the pont or
sheet Door of the said House near wide open after then That this informant (with
John Gascoign< no role > ) pursued immediately and instantly the said Three Men, the last of
whom was Joseph Brown whom they Overtook Who was without any Shoes on
and whom this Informant was sure upon his Oath was one of the said three Men
so he had not left Sight of him a Moment. That John Gascoign< no role > and this informant
(together with Curtis seized the said Joseph Brown ) And this Informant upon his Oath
saith that he verily and in truth Suspects and beleives that the said Joseph Brown
feloniously and Burglariously did Enter the said Dwelling House of Mrs. Winford
with an Intent to Steal and rob the said House; and he verily believes that the said
Three Mended Enter it with No other View or design. And that in the apprehending &
Conveying the said Joseph Brown to Mrs. Winfords He the said Joseph Brown did
violently Assault and thrust at the said Robert Stephenson< no role > this Informant with
along Sharp pointed Knife which cutt through his Two Coats but providentially
did not wound his Body.
