The Information of John Gascoign< no role > in
Argyll Buildings in the Parish of Saint James in
the Liberty of Westminster One of his Majesty's
Officers of Excise Taken before us two of his
Majestys Justices of the Peace in and for the said
County City and Libety

Who being upon his Oath Saith that about two of the Clock in the
Morning of the first of this Instant November being at that time going
upon duty from the house of the Right Honourable Lord Vane where
he lives the Watchman of Argyll Buildings at that time Passing by
(whose Name is Stephenson) This Informant entered into Conversation
with the said Stephenson and whilst they were Conversing together
the said Stephenson told this Informant he saw three Men go out
of Mrs. Winfords door which is the next house to Lord Vanes. This
Informant immediately turned himself Round and saw the last of
the said three Men going off the door Step of Mrs. Winfords house the
Street door of which was open. This Informant immediately pursued
him (and in Such Purscit cried out Stop Thief and over took the
said Man whom he had never Lost Sight of whose Name is Joseph Browne< no role > ) in Carnaby Street John Curtis< no role > A Watchman
in Carnaby Street in the aforesaid Parish of Saint James hearing
the Cry of Stop Thief met the said Browne as this Informant was
Pursuing him who Seeing Curtis was going to Strike him he fell down
upon which this Informant and the said Curtis secured him and were
Conveying him to Mrs. Winfords house But turning out of Marlbor [..] ,
Street into Argyll Buildings the said Browns drew a Clasp Knife
out of his Right hand Pocket and Stabbed this Informant in the
left Arm in a dangerous manner and also Cut him on the Right hand
and Each Side of his head. That he Verily believes the Stab Which
he received in the left Arm prevented his being Stabbed in the Body
as his great Coat which he then had on) was much Cut, Etc That his
Hat was also Cut almost to Pieces Saith that had not proper
Assistance then come he belives the said Browne would have Murderd
him. Lastly Saith that sometime after the said Browne was
so secured as aforesaid he found a Knife near to the Place where
the Scuffle last mentioned happened and with which he verily
believes the said Browne so cut and Wounded his Informant
And this Informant Saith that at the time he over took the said
Browne in Carnaby Street as aforesaid he had no Shoes on his feet
and Saith not further.
