The Information of John Curtis< no role > One of the Watchmen of the Parish of Saint
James in the Liberty of Westminster and County of Middlesex taken upon
Oath this Seventh Day of November 1769 before us Two of his Majesty's
Justices of the Peace in and for the said County.

This Informant upon his Oath saith That after he had cryed the Hour of one in the
Morning of Wednesday the 1st. Instant November 1769 he put up his Lanthorn in his
Watch Box and had been his rounds (by way of patroling) without his Lanthorn, And as
he this Informant Stood at his Watch Box he heard the Cry of Stop Thief, upon which he
made the best of the way towards the Voice, he met Joseph Brown running towards this
Informant without any Shoes on, upon which this Informant held up his Staff to
make a Blow at him, and Joseph Brown fell down on the Ground; That Mr John
Gascoign
< no role > had pursued Brown so close that as Brown fell down, Gascoign fell over him,
and Robert Stephenson< no role > the other Watchman was running as fast as he could to catch
Brown, but Gascoign was Nimbler, However Stephenson overtook Brown almost instantly
and these three persons Vizt. Gascoign, Stephenson and Curtis secured Brown and brought
him to Mrs. Winfords House; And that On the way between where Brown was taken and
Mrs. Winford's and while Brown was in Custody He this Informant saw Brown draw out
from his Pocket a long Knife with which he saw him wound Mr John Gascoign< no role > , and saw
him make Two pushes or thrusts at the said Gascoign; Upon which Gascoign said to this
Informant and Robert Stephenson< no role > , Watchmen Knock him door for he has Stabbed me &
has cut me to Peices, Upon which this Informant did Knock the said Brown down; And
this Informant further upon his Oath saith that the front or Street Door of Mr. Winfords
House was near Wide open Upon which this Informant with other's Conveyed the said
Brown to St. James's Round House; That Joseph Brown this Informant beleives might
have been drinking, but he was not drunk for he Could and did Walk very well and Run
very well. And this Informant found and picked up Two pick Lock or false Keys upon the
Spot where the Skirmish happened which [..] Joseph Brown threw away:
as he saw him do it. And this Informant saw his Brother Watchman Robt. Stephenson
pick up the Knife with which the said Joseph Brown had Stabbed John Gascoign< no role >
