this 3rd. day of August 1768
Who being upon Oath severally say and first the said William
King< no role >
for himself says that on Saturday Morning last a person
now present who calls himself Elias Chippett published and
tendered in Payment to this Informant as true a Bill of Exchange
now produced purporting to be the Bill of Exchange of William Holmes< no role >
upon Messrs. Elias Chippett< no role >
& Co. Merchants for twelve pounds
five Shillings in favour of John Hall< no role >
and this Informant farther
saith that he verily believes the said Bill to be falsely made forged
and counterfeited and that it was published by the said Chippet knowing
it to be so, says that last Saturday Morning the said Chippet called
himself Rogers and wrote the Name Wm. Rogers upon the said
Bill, and the said Joseph Pope< no role >
for himself says that on
Saturday last he went by the Directions of the said William King< no role >
to the Portugal Coffee House
to enquire after Elias Chippet< no role >
& Co.
& was there told that knew no such person and that several
Bills upon the same persons had been brought there but that
they had all been returned as there was no person to answer
them
