The Information of John

Oxford Market Labourer , taken
before me this 21st. Day of
October 1766 .

Who being upon Oath saith that on Thursday
last about there of the Clock in the Afternoon as
he was passing down Holborn, he was accosted by
a Stranger, who after asking Informant what
County man he was, decoyed him to an Adjacent
Public House, where two other Men also
Strangers, to this Informant interfered and mixed
in Company; says that after drinking some time
there the said three Persons took this Informant
to another House in the Fields adjoining to a
Gravel Road, where by several artful Insinuation
a Wager of half a Guinea was proposed to be laid
with this Informant that he and one of the Parties
did not produce within one hour and an half [..]
forty Pounds; saith that Suspecting no fraud he
went to his Lodgings us above and fetched the sum
of thirty one Pounds fifteen Shillings and Six pence
in Gold excepting one Crown Piece in Silver to
the Second House they took him to as aforesaidl; saith
they then all three took him to a third Ale house
known by the Sign of the White Hart and Shoulder
of Mutton near Brooks Market , where this
Informant in Order to win his Wager told out
his Money, and put it into his Purse again
