The Information of Canley Thomas Kerby< no role >
Esqr Taken before me this 21st. Day of
June, 1765

Who being upon Oath says that on Friday the 7th. of June Instant
at about Ten o'Clock at Night as he was passing by the New Church
in the Strand a Person now present who calls himself Robert
By field< no role > Attempted to Pick this Informant's Pocket of
his Handkerchief Snuff Box in which he dected him and
seized hold of him upon which another Person now present who
calls himself Barney Carrol< no role > came up and by his Behaviour appeared
to be an Accomplice of said Byfield's but that Informt. in Order
to [..] terrifre the Boy (By field) told him he wou'd carey him to a Justice
says as he led said Byfield on towards Temple Barr Carrel
followed him and seemed to Meditate the rescue of sd. Byfield
says that at this time he also observed two other Persons to
appear as part of the Gang whom he believes to be two Persons
now present who call themselves William King< no role > and Derby
Mathews< no role > and imagining they intended to assist Carrol in the Rescue
of the sd. boy Byfield he desired Robt. Carr< no role > now present who
happened to pass by to Walk behind this Informt. and keep
off the Prisoners, which he promised to do saying he saw
there was a Gang after him, that when he came to the Corner
of Arundele Street sd. Carrol stept a few paces before this
Informt. stopt short and looked under his hatt in order for Informant to
raise his head which as soon as he [..] had done he
Immediately struck him a violent blow upon the Nose with
a drawn knife which he drew across his Eyes [..] by means
whereof [..] part of this Informant's Nose was slit and his
Eye lids almost divided
