Upon Reading a Letter from Mr. James John
Ireland< no role > (one of the Tenants belonging to this Hospital
at Wapping ) Addressed to the Clerk and DatedBarking
Monday 27th. April 1778 in the words and figures following
Vizt." SirPursuant to the directions of the Committee
'' held at the Bridewell Hospital on Friday last, I remit you
" the Inclosed Account of the amount of the Present Rents of
" the Houses I hold of the Hospital and also an Account of
" the Arrears of Rent (recoverable) due to me from the several
" Tenants which I must beg you to lay before the Court. I
" was Summoned to Attend the last Committee to Assign my
" reasons why the Arrears due to the Hospital were not
" discharged when my Son who Attended on my behalf
" Acquainted the Gentlemen with truth that I could not
" Possibly pay them or any part of them, having no means
" where with so to do but that I was ready and willing to
" give up the possession of the Estate and to Assign the
" Arrears due to me from the Tenants of the Estate. I must
" therefore beg the favor of you to Inform the General Court
" that if it shall please the Court to Accept of such Surrender
" and Assignment in satisfaction of my Debt to the Hospital
" I will make the same immediately and my Son shall
" Attend next Thursday to take the directions of the Court
" I Trust that the Court will be pleased to Accept of this
" proposition and in that Case permit me to hope that from
" the Rents due to me from the Tenants and by me to be
" Assigned to the Hospital, and the improved Rent of the
" Estate the Hospital will long before the Expiration of my
" Term be paid what I owe it"
