Additions and Alterations might be made in this Hospital (in Consequence of the
Agreement for Conveying the Houses and Appartments to the City of London ) They
had proceeded in such Inquiry and had taken a View of the Remises and found
that by the Sale of the Houses and Premises to the City Four Houses on the East
side of the Hospital and the Appartments of Three Artsmasters and the Stores-
House for Hemp and the Hemp Shop the Yard, Larden Pantry Coal Cellar and
other Conveniences belonging to the Minister, the Engine House and Covering for
Coaches had been or Soon would be destroyed and taken away And that they had
directed the Surveyor of this Hospital to Examine the State of the Buildings in the
said Outer Court and to give his Opinion thereon And that said Surveyor had
made his Report in Writing with a Plan and Estimate which were theown to
Annexed Whereby as well from their own View and Examination it appeared
that such part of the North Wing of said Outer Court as was left Standing was in
such a Slate and Condition that it would not be Prudent or for the benefit of the
Charity to Rebuild alter and Repair the same And found that by taking
down the rest of the said North Wing the Porters Appartments and the Lodges
Used for Imprisoning Apprentices Committed by the Chamberlaine and by the
Hospital would be taken away And also found upon their own View and by the
said Report that the Ground Floor and Foundation of the Buildings which
divided the two Courts of said Hospital and many Years ago used as a Prison
were become so Decayed and ruinous as to require immediate Attention And
that it would be necessary to make and Erect a Fence Wall to Divide the said
Outer Court from the New Street with Vaults Buildings and other Conveniences
on that Side of the Court for the Use and Accomodation of the Hospital and of the
Ministers and other Officers And said Surveyor having laid his Plan before
them for Erecting two New Houses on the Sate of the North Wing and for making
a Communication between the said Two Courts by Supporting with Columns that
Buildings which divide those Courts And for Erecting the said Fence Wall
Buildings and other Conveniences They were of Opinion such Buildings
would be absolutely necessary to Replace those which have been and must be
taken away And that the design of Opening a Communication between the said
Courts would (in the very Narrow and Confined Limits to which the Oater Court
was Reduced) be much for the Health and Utility of the Numerous Inhabitants
of the said Hospital by admitting a free Calculation of Air and affording the
Apprentices a place of Resort in Leisure Hours and bad weather And the
Surveyor having laid before them his said Estimate of the Expence of the aforesaid
Buildings Alterations and Improvements amounting to the Sum of £4574-10
That they approved of the said Plans and were of Opinion that sd. £ 4574-10
night be paid and Applied from time to time for the purpose afd. by the treasurer
of this Hospital out of the Sum of £ 5068-19-9 by him [..] Reced by Order of the
Bridge Commitee as part of the Consn for the Buildings Lands and Remises
Sold and Conveyed to the City All which was Submitted to the Judgment of
this Court.
