And Vacant Ground of the Outer Court within the said Hospital in Order
to inform this Committee what Regulations Additions and Alterations may
be necessary therein Consequence of the Agreement made for Conveying the
Houses and Appartments (part of the said Hospital) to the City of London
And I find that the North Wing of the said Outer Court having been
very much disfigured and Dismantled towards the East by cutting through
and dividing the several Appartments in an Obligue irregular Direction
pursuant to the Agreement made with the City, the same are rendered
totally useless and Uninhabitable And that by the Intervention of the
Gateway leading into the said Court the adjoining Hair Case, the different
Elevations of the Floors & the Narrow Dimensions of the Rooms towards
the West; it will be impracticable to Repair and fit up the said North
Wing for any Advantageous on Convenient purposes. I am therefore of
Opinion that if any Alteration is Attempted to be made the Expence
thereof will be very great and inadequate; for that the East and thereof
must be intirely Rebuilt the inside wholly taken down (which will be
attended with great Risque to the Safety of such Building) and the
Appartments therein must be New Built and fitted up, And I am
further of Opinion that it will be more prudent and Adviseable that
So much of the said North Wing as now Remains standing should be
intirely taken down And that two new Houses be Erected on the Sate of the
said North Wing pursuant to the Plan laid down and approved by the
Bridge Committee which will be more Commodious us such new Buildings
may be greatly extended towards the North so as to rainge in a direct
Line with Bride Lane and thereby gain in Breadth for the Hospital
what has been given up in Length and Sold to the Said City and us the
Old Materials will be very useful in such New Erections And I have
also Surveyed the Buildings which divide the two Courts of the said
Hospital And find the Foundation and Ground Floor thereof (having
been formerly used as a Prison for Felow) by Dampness & want of Air is
become so Decayed and ruinous that the same cannot be supported without
being Needled shored up and Under Pinned But in regard the Outer Court is
now become very much Narrowed & Confined & the Inhabitants of the said
Hospital are Numerous I am of Opinion it will be much more healthy and
Convenient if the lower part of the said last mentd Buildings is Supported
by Columns whereby a free Circulation of Air will be Introduced and the Appres
will have Room in Vacant Hours and Wet weather to retire under Cover
without being troublesome to there st of the Inhabitants And I also find
that in Order to Separate the said Outer Court from the New intended Street it
will be necessary to Build a Parapet Wall 19. Feet High on the Inside
under which may be Erected Appartments for the Porter & his Man wth other
Rooms and Conveniences ever the same And a Gateway and Colonade to
to Communicate with the Stairs leading to the Chapel Court Room and
Great Hall which will be the only Enhance into the Hospital And I have
drawn a Plan of the said proposed Buildings, Alterations & Improvements
& an Estimate or Calculation of the Expence thereof (See Estimate Book
Page 59) All which is humbly Submitted to your Worships by Gentn Your
most Obedt. humble Servt Saml. Williams< no role > . It is Ordered the [..]
Report be & the same is hereby Confined. And it is further Ordered that the
Treasr. of this Hospital for the time being shall and may from time to time pay &
apply such Sums of Money as shall be necessary for Defraying the Expences of [..]
Buildings Erections and Improvemts. mentd. in the sd Report according to the said
Plan and Estimate by the Hospital Surveyor out of the Sum of £5068-19-9
