<div2 type="smdssetColumn">John Tomkins aged about fourty years (in the Workhouse) past from Bergholt in Essex saith he was born in Spurr Alley where his ffather a Shoemaker had Houses of his own and kept an Alehouse there (the Sign of the Barge Saith he was bound an Apprentice by Indenture for seven years to one John Matthews who kept a Coal Cellar in Spurr Alley aforesaid whom he served about three Years and then his Master and he removed into Bedford Bury and there he served about One Year more then ran away and never was turned over to any Person afterwards nor never kept House rented ten Pounds by the Year paid any Parish Taxes or hath been a yearly hired Servant for the Space of a Year in any one Service since saith he is a widower and hath so been these seven years that he hath noChildren living Sworn the Day of Before</div2>
