<p n="2038"> THAT the general expence of maintaining, conveying and shipping Vagrants<lb></lb>
in the <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMPS50809_geo1779">County of lancaster</rs>

in the years 1780, 1781, and 1782 has been<lb></lb>
£2372:18:4 in the whole.</p>
<p n="2039">THAT by a particular account taken of the Number of Vagrants so main-<lb></lb>
tained, conveyed and shipped, and the expence of such maintenance, convey-<lb></lb>
ance and shipping in the County of <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMPS50809_geo1780">Lancaster</rs>
<interp inst="LMSMPS50809_geo1780" type="placeName" value="Lancaster"></interp>
<interp inst="LMSMPS50809_geo1780" type="type" value="undefined"></interp>
for one year ending the 31st day<lb></lb>
of December 1783, the whole number of Vagrants passed has been 4665, of<lb></lb>
which 3456 have been Irish Vagrants.</p>
<p n="2040">THAT the general expence of maintaining and conveying all such Vagrants<lb></lb>
in the County of Lancaster has been £2042:18:0, and that the expence of<lb></lb>
maintaining, conveying and shipping the said Irish Vagrants only in the County<lb></lb>
of Lancaster has been £1355:10:2.</p>
<p n="2041">That Committee think it necessary to observe, That the Statute of the 17th<lb></lb>
Geo. II. C. 5, intitled "An Act to amend and make more effectual the Laws<lb></lb>
"relating to Rogues, Vagabonds, and other idle and disorderly persons, and<lb></lb>
"to Houses of Correction," is the Act of Parliament upon which the Allow-<lb></lb>
ances and Regulations relative to the apprehending, punishment, maintenance,<lb></lb>
conveyance and shipping of Vagrants do principally depend.</p>
<p n="2042">That by the same Act Sect. VII. and VIII, it is enacted that the Magistrate<lb></lb>
shall inform himself, and state in the examination of each vagrant, the parish<lb></lb>
or place, where such Vagrant was last legally settled, and the substance of such<lb></lb>
examination is directed to be reduced into Writing, and one Copy thereof to<lb></lb>
be sent with the vagrant, and a Duplicate transmitted to the Quarter Sessions;<lb></lb>
and the Justices granting passes are required to order all Vagrants apprehended<lb></lb>
to be publicly whipped or to be sent to the <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMPS50809_geo1781">House of Correction</rs>

, there to re-<lb></lb>
main until the next Sessions, or for any less time as such Justices shall think<lb></lb>
proper. And the form of the Pass to be made use of is prescribed by Sect.<lb></lb>
VII. of the Act.</p>
<p n="2043">THAT by Sect. XV. of the said Act it is directed with respect to Irish Va-<lb></lb>
grants, that no Master of a Vessel shall be compelled to take on board more than<lb></lb>
one Vagrant for every 20 Tons burden of the Vessel in which such Vagrant<lb></lb>
shall be shipped.</p>
<p n="2044">THAT the Justices in Sessions are by Sect. XIV. of the same Act, empowered<lb></lb>
to six the rate to be paid to the Masters of Vessels for carrying over Irish Va-<lb></lb>
grants. And by Sect. XVI. they are also empowered to six the rates and al-<lb></lb>
lowances per mile, or otherwise, for the passing, conveying and maintaining<lb></lb>
Vagrants, and to make such other orders, rules and directions for the more re-<lb></lb>
gular proceeding or acting therein, within their respective limits and Jurisdic-<lb></lb>
tions as they in their discretion shall think proper, which rates, allowances, or-<lb></lb>
ders, rules and directions shall from time to time be observed and submitted to<lb></lb>
by all <rs type="occupation" id="LMSMPS50809_occ890">Justices of the Peace</rs>

, Constables, Officers and other Persons, within the<lb></lb>
