I received your second Lre very late last Night in<lb></lb>
Solder Square the Letter I had the Honor to send you yesterday<lb></lb>
war by the direction of the <rs type="occupation" id="LMSMPS50745_occ151">Justices of the peace</rs>

then in Sessions<lb></lb>
assembled. Our Sessions being now ended, as a single Justice I can<lb></lb>
take no Steps contrary to the Resolutions of the Sessions upon the<lb></lb>
Matter at that Time. Permit one however to observe that<lb></lb>
Thos. from the particular Circumstances attending the Gaol of<lb></lb>
Newgate the Sheriff of Middx may lodge his prisoners in the<lb></lb>

I conceive it to be<lb></lb>
the duty of the Sheriff to keep these prisoners secure; particularly<lb></lb>
as I am informed that your Gaoler the Keeper of Newgate has<lb></lb>
continual Access to his prisoners in the sd. two prisons and disposes<lb></lb>
of them according to the Orders he receives from you, taking fees<lb></lb>
for the same.</p>
<p n="492">I apprehend the Sheriffs will have no doubt of their<lb></lb>
duty in this matter if they will please to refer to the Stat. of<lb></lb>
7 Geo: 3. c.37. Sect. 6. whereby the Sheriff is directed to<lb></lb>
convey and keep and detain in any prison in London or<lb></lb>
Middx any prisoners who are or by law ought to be committed<lb></lb>
to the County Gaol.and by the last Sect. of the Stat. of<lb></lb>
20 Geo: 3. c. bh "The Sheriffs are to confine any Psons arrested<lb></lb>
"or taken in Execution in any Gaol within the Co: of Midx<lb></lb>
"and such Gaol is to be subject to all such Regulation as County<lb></lb>
Gaols" consequently in that respect under the Care of the<lb></lb>
Sheriffs of the County so far as relates to there prisoners</p>
