& the sd. Mr. Ricard (when in the<lb></lb>
Chair) having as this Deponent understood by his maimer of Answering<lb></lb>
this Deponent consented that this Deponent might so do He this<lb></lb>
Deponent did soon afterwards Sign a Permissive Licence to the sd. Lewis<lb></lb>
Hallam to Sell Ale & Beer And this Depont. denys that he knowsor belief<lb></lb>
that the sd. House kept by the sd. Lewis Hallam is a Comon reputed or<lb></lb>
known Bawdy House or that the said Lewis Hallam would suffer<lb></lb>
Idle & disorderly Persons of both Sexes to resort there Day & Night &<lb></lb>
Comit Outrages & Disorders to the Disturbance of the Inhabitants<lb></lb>
And this Depont. denys he was urgent on the behalf of the said Lewis<lb></lb>
Hallam or Endeavoured to get some or one of the Justices to join with<lb></lb>
him in granting a Licence to the sd. Lewis Hallam or Intermedled<lb></lb>
therein save as aforesaid And this Depont. further Saith that the said<lb></lb>
Richard Ricards was afterwards so well satisfyed with the Character of<lb></lb>
the said Lewis Hallam & of his sd. House that he joined with this Depo<obscured></obscured>
<lb></lb>
in granting the sd. Lewis Hallam a Licence to Sell Beer & Ale therein<lb></lb>
under which Licence the sd. Lewis Hallam now keeps the sd House<lb></lb>
which Licence is Dated Nineteenth of September One Thousand Seven<lb></lb>
Hundred & Fifty And this Deponent further Saith that it has been<lb></lb>
Usual & Customary for any one of the Justices of the Peace for that<lb></lb>
Division in the Intervals between the Sessions for granting Licences<lb></lb>
to Sign a Permission under their Hands to such Person as they should<lb></lb>
think fit to Sell Beer & Ale which Permissions are Comonly called<lb></lb>
Permissive Licences And if such Permissions or Permissive Licences are<lb></lb>
illegal or improper (which this Deponent humbly Submits to your<lb></lb>
Lordships Judgment) this Depont. Saith he was induced so to do by many<lb></lb>
Instances which had seen of such Permissions having been granted<lb></lb>
by other Justices of the Peace within the same Division And this<lb></lb>
Depont. did not at the time of Granting the same know or apprehend the<lb></lb>
same was illegal or improper And this Depont. further Says that the said<lb></lb>
Richard Ricards hath himself Granted more of these Permissive Licences<lb></lb>
than ever he this Depont. hath one as he hath heard & verily believes</p>
