him in granting a Licence to the sd. Lewis Hallam or Intermedled

Richard Ricards was afterwards so well satisfyed with the Character of

the said Lewis Hallam & of his sd. House that he joined with this Depo

Hundred & Fifty And this Deponent further Saith that it has been

Usual & Customary for any one of the Justices of the Peace for that

Division in the Intervals between the Sessions for granting Licences

to Sign a Permission under their Hands to such Person as they should

think fit to Sell Beer & Ale which Permissions are Comonly called

Permissive Licences And if such Permissions or Permissive Licences are

illegal or improper (which this Deponent humbly Submits to your

Lordships Judgment) this Depont. Saith he was induced so to do by many

Instances which had seen of such Permissions having been granted

by other Justices of the Peace within the same Division And this

Depont. did not at the time of Granting the same know or apprehend the

same was illegal or improper And this Depont. further Says that the said

Richard Ricards hath himself Granted more of these Permissive Licences
