the Chair) such License was refused And this Depont. admits he<lb></lb>
did upon such Refusal say he thought it was every hard Case<lb></lb>
to refuse a Licence to an old Licensed House without any Apparent<lb></lb>
Reason & desired to know what the Poor Man must door to that<lb></lb>
Effect whereto the sd. Richard Ricards replyed that they did not<lb></lb>
Chuse then to grant him a License but that this Depont. might Sign<lb></lb>
him a Permissive Licence as before which would Enable the said<lb></lb>
Lewis Hallam to get a Licence from the Comissioners of Excise for<lb></lb>
retailing Spirituous Liquors And this Depont. possitively denys that<lb></lb>
before or at the Sessions for granting Licences a Complaint was made<lb></lb>
to this Depont. or to the sd. Justices of the Peace or any of the unto this<lb></lb>
Deponts. Knowledge or Belief) against the sd. Lewis Hallam for<lb></lb>
keeping a Comon Reputed or known Bawdy House or that Idle<lb></lb>
disorderly Persons resorted by Day or Night to the said House &<lb></lb>
But on the contrary this Deponent Saith the sd. Alehouse taken by the<lb></lb>
said Lewis Hallam was reputed to be our Orderly & Creditable House</p>
