he this Deponent lived with Mr. Mash one of the Surveyors to the Turnpike for about<lb></lb>
years and Untill the <rs type="date" id="LMSMPS50170_date8">Seaventeenth day of april last</rs>

ponent did constantly drive one of the Said Mashes Teemes & most Commonly worked on the<lb></lb>
Highwayes both to dirt Cart and gravell Cart, and this Deponent worked att dirt Cart<lb></lb>
in Company with Mr. Hawlsted Cart & Mr. Nichols's there were five or Six people to fill the<lb></lb>
Said Carts and which Said Men Stood Still Untill the Carts returned againe for want<gap reason="illegible"></gap>
<lb></lb>
of a Standing Cart or Carts to employ them, by which meanes this Deponent Veryly beleives<lb></lb>
That the Said Labourers by Soe Standing Still for want of Standing Carts they did not doe half<lb></lb>

of his Judgment Veryly beleives a man might<lb></lb>
gett as much work don for fifteene or<obscured></obscured>
Shillings as the three Teemes & Six Labourers<lb></lb>
did in a day; And the rather became the Said Teemes belongd to the Said Surveyers & noe care was<lb></lb>
taken to make the Said Men work who were permitted to mispend and Loytes away their time for<lb></lb>
that the Surveyers never found fault with them tho' they did never Soe little work; And this<lb></lb>
Dept further Sayeth that there were Seldome any Carts allowed to work att dirt Cart but the<lb></lb>
Surveyers own Teemes Except Mr. Nichols of Finchleys who is brother in Law to the Said<lb></lb>
Mr. Mash; And this Dept further Sayeth that he this Dept. generally worked with a Smale<lb></lb>
Cart both att Gravell Cart and dirt cart to the Turnpike, which Said Cart was made as<lb></lb>
this Dept beleives to carry two dozen of hay and which Said Cart if measured this Dept<lb></lb>
beleives the Same would not carry above Eighteene Bushells for both the head beard<lb></lb>
And fayle board are very narrow and which Said Cart was never carried out to work when<lb></lb>
the Carts were to be measured And as other Teemes had two men to attend oath Teeme to full<lb></lb>
their Carts they never had any to fill theirs Except the Said Mashes Son a Smale youth who<lb></lb>
attended this Dept. in Company with another Teeme but did little or noe work and did not<lb></lb>
goe Constantly Yet this Dept beleives the Said Mashes Son was paid equally with other the<lb></lb>
Labourers that worked to the Said Turnpike, however of late the Said Mr. Mash Sends one<lb></lb>
Man with his own Two Carts and that of Mr. Nichols's And this Dept further observed & often<lb></lb>

Mr. Shettles Smale Cart work att the Turnpike which Said Cart this Dept. beleives is not<lb></lb>
Much bigger then the Said Mashes Smale Cart And this Dept. further Sayeth that the Said<lb></lb>
Mr. Mash had the head boards of his Carts cutt in order as this Dept beleives to carry <obscured></obscured>

Leads And that he this Dept. Seldome Saw the Sd Mr. Mash upon the road to looke after the<lb></lb>
Workmen unlesse it<gap reason="illegible"></gap>
morning And Sometimes in an Evening And the<lb></lb>

further Sayeth that<gap reason="illegible"></gap>
Speake very Angerly to Mr. Burrett for<lb></lb>
undertakeing to work att an Under rate to the Turnpike for he might have three or four<lb></lb>
Shillings more a day if he had jusisted upon it And likewise this Dept. heard Mrs. Mash<lb></lb>
the Surveyers wife Say that her husband was very Angry both with Mr. Borrett & Mr<lb></lb>
Spencer for working att an under rate or words to that or the like Effect; And this Dept<lb></lb>
further Sayeth yt he often came to Towne wth. a Load of hay & afterwards went to work to the Turnpike<lb></lb>
And beleives his Said Master was paid for a whole days work</p>
