, employed him to receive the money, for which he was to suffer; that he deliver'd it to this Stocker, which is a false name, and was by him offered half a crown for his trouble, which he refused. He farther said, that Jourdan recommended the pretended Stocker to him as Master at Arms on board the Boreas; that he went two such messages for them, and at the third was detain'd and apprehended, when his [supposed] employers were sent for, and search'd after, but had escaped, suspecting the prisoner was detected. His friends, he added, had been in search after them ever since, but could never find them. He declared he had no knowledge of this being the wrong person, nor that the papers were forgeries; for had he known it, he would not have gone thrice to the same house, with a known forgery. Notwithstanding this plausible apology to induce a belief that this unhappy sufferer was imposed upon, and made a Cat's-Paw, it is strongly surmised, by those who should know, that he belonged to a dangerous gang, who carried on this trade of forgery in concert, and that his true name is not yet known to us.
