Examination TextThe Examination of Sarah Cox lodging at Mr Earl's No.21 in New Round Court in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields taken this third Day of January in the year of our Lord 1785. This Examinant on her oath saith that she is 22 years of age and upwards, that she never was married nor bound an apprentice, that she was a a yearly hired servant to Mr Joseph Greensill a Jeweller near Buckingham Street in the Strand in the Parish aforesaid for the space of two years all under one hiring at the yearly wages of six Guineas diet and lodging, quitted same about five years ago, that she hath not kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since, And this Examinant on her voluntary oath further saith that she is now big with child or children which is or are likely to be born a bastard or bastards and to become chargeable to the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields, and that Thomas Hill a dealer in houses who lately lodged at No.196 or 186 in Holborn had carnal knowledge of her body the latter and of the month of May last in and upon a bed up two pair of stairs at the house of Mr Smith a Publican in Hart Street Bloomsbury and several times afterwards in the same place or in the same room at which time or one of which times he the said Thomas Hill did beget her with child or children she now goeth with and is pregnant off, and that he the said Thomas Hill is the true and only father thereof and no man else.
