Examination TextThe Examination of Margaret Coates in the Workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields Taken this Sixth Day of January in the year 1786. This Examinant on her Oath saith that she is 31 years of Age that she is the Widow of George Coates who Died about two years ago to whom she was Married in the Parish Church of St Giles in the Fields in the County of Middlesex about Nine years ago. That her said Husband was bound an Apprentice by an Indenture for seven years to Mr Brown a Cordwainer in the Parish of St Giles in the Fields and there served his said Master removed into that part of Rose Street near Long Acre which is in the said Parish of St. Martin in the Fields and there he this Examinants Husband served all the remainder of his Apprenticeship Out as she hath been Informed by her said Husband that he never Kept House rented a tenement of ten pounds by the year paid any Parish taxes nor was a yearly hired servant in any One Place for twelve Months together after the expiration of his said Apprenticeship nor hath this Examinant Kept House rented a tenement of ten Pounds by the year paid any Parish taxes nor hath been a yearly hired Servant in any one Place for twelve Months together since the Death of her said Husband that she this Examinant was passed as a vagrant from the Parish of St. Giles in the Fields in the County of Middlesex.
