Read the petition of Ann Evans, 16 years of age, of the Parish of Bedminster Bristol. Her Father is dead; Her mother is a milkwoman. She assisted her mother for some time; but was persuaded to make her way to London. She lived about nine months with Mr William Bassett; who keeps the fighting Cocks at Maidenhead, who knew her Father, when they were Boys in Devonshire. From thence she proceeded towards Town, and being in distress at Hammersmith, she went into a straw bonnet shop (Mrs. Macheens's) & stole from the Counter five shillings. She was committed to Prison, convicted and suffered six months Imprisonment in the House of Correction Cold Bath Fields, the Keeper of which gave a very favourable account of her demeanour there to this committee. She has, besides a mother, 2 Brothers & a sister by the name of Haskins, living at Bedminster, Bristol. She was never in London before she was conveyed to Prison, & was considered by this committee as wearing the appearance of Innocence. She declares, that she never has been at all criminally connected with men. Admitted.
