The Order of William Brodie< no role > and John
Nares
< no role > Esquire two of his MAjesty's Justices of
the Peace in and for the said County one whereof is
of the Quorum, and both residing next unto the Limits
of the Parish Church within the Parish of Saint Luke
in the said County
made the thirteenth Day of February in the
year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred
and ninety Eight
concerning a female
Bastard Child, lately born in the said Parish of Saint
Luke in the County aforesaid, of the Body of
Mary Chevalier< no role > Single Woman .

WHEREAS it hath appeared unto us the said Justices, as well upon the Complaint
of the Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of
Saint Luke as upon the Oath of the said Mary Chevalier< no role >
that she the said Mary Chevalier< no role > on the first Day of
January now last past, was delivered of a female Bastard Child, at the House
of Wm Smith< no role > inthe said Shrewsbury Court in the said
Parish and that the said female Bastard Child islikely to be chargeable
to the said Parish of Saint Luke and further, that that William Edwards< no role >
of Fleat Lane in thesaid City of London Painter did beget the said
Bastard Child on the Body of her the said Mary Chevalier< no role > and Whereas
the said William Edwards< no role > now appears before his the said Justices
in order to make his defence to the said sharpe but not having
shewn any cause to this Contrary.
We therefore, upon Examination of the Cause and Circumstance of the Premises, as
well upon the Oath of the said Mary Chevalier< no role > as otherwise,do hereby
adjudge him the said William Edwards< no role > to be the reputed Father of the
said Bastard Child.

And thereupon we do order, as well for the better Relief of the said Parish of
Saint Luke as for the Sustentation and Relief of the said Bastard Child, that
the said William Edwards< no role > shall and do forthwith, upon Notice of this our Order,
pay or cause it to be paid to the said Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the
said Parish of Saint Luke or to some or one of them, the Sum of Eight Shillings
and Six pence for and towardsthe Lying in of the said and the Main-
tenance of the said Bastard Child, to the Time of making this our Order.

And we do also hereby further order, that the said William Edwards< no role > shall likewise
pay, or cause to be paid, to the Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said
Parish of Saint Luke for the Time being, or to some or one of them, the Sum of
Two Shillings and Six Pence Weekly and every Week from the present Time, for and towards the
Keeping, Sustentation, and Maintenance of the said Bastard Child, for and during so long,
Time as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Luke
And we do further order, that the said shall also pay
or cause to be paid to the said Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said
for the Time being, or to some or one of them, the Sum of
Weekly and every Week, so long as the said Bastard Child
shall be chargeable to the said in case she shall not nurse
And take care of the said Child hereself.

Given under our Hands and Seals the Day and Year first above written.
