Middlesex


To His Majestys Justices of the Peace for the County of Middlesex
in their General Session of the Peace held in and for the said County at the
Sessions House on Clerkenwell Green (by adjournment) on Wednesday the 29th.
day of March 1786 Assembled

The Report of the Committee appointed to inspect
the Plans of a House of Correction for this County
already delivered in for the consideration of the
Magistrates and to prepare and settle a Plan proper
for the said House of Correction , adapted to the Ground
agreed to be purchased of Jervoise Clarke Jervoise< no role >
Esqr . and others in Cold Bath fields and to form an
Estimate of the Expence of carrying the same into
Execution, and also to consider of a proper Methods
of raising the Sum of £4000 to pay for the purchase
of the said Ground.

The said Committee Report, That the first Meeting of this
Committee was held on Tuesday 17th. January 1786

William Bleamire< no role > Esqr was requested to take the Chair.

It appearing to this Committee that the Method of raising the
sum of £4000 for the purchase of the Ground, though it Hands last in the
above recited Summary of th Business to be brought before them, is in its
Nature and Importance, the Primary Object of Attention, it was judged necessary
in the first place to enquire into the Extent of the Powers given to Magistrates
in this respect by the Statute 24th. Geo: 3d. Chap: 55. And doubts having
arisen in the minds of the Committee, whether a sufficient paver is granted
by the said Statute for the purchase of Land otherwise than by Implication
rather than in express Terms It was Resolved that a Case le drawn
and laid before some Eminent counsel for his Opinion, that the Committee
might be fully satisfied on this point and might not enter prematurely on
the Business submitted to their consideration It was therefore Resolved
