Whereas upon the humble peticon of severall poor prisoners for debt in her
Maties. Goal of Newgate exhibited to her Maties. Justices of the peace for this
County at the last Generall Quarter Sessions of the peace held for the
same at Hicks hall in St. John Street the seventh day of July last
complaining of severall misdemeanors comitted by James Fell< no role > Keeper
of the sd. Goal & his Turnkeys & severall prisoners in his custody It was
recomended & referred unto John Pery< no role > Alexander Pitfeild< no role > John Metcalfe< no role >
Richard Browne< no role > Roger Smith< no role > Benjamin Hilton< no role > & John Crosbie< no role > Esqrs.
seven of her Maties. Justices of the peace for this County or any three of
them to repaire to her Maties. Goal of Newgate and examine into the
complaints of the sd. poor prisoners, And to make a report thereupon
to this Court, Now upon reading of the report of the sd. John Pery
Richard Browne< no role > Roger Smith< no role > Benjamin Hilton< no role > & John Crosbie< no role > five of sd. Referrees
& of the seveall affidts. by them taken relateing to the sd. misdemeanors
whereby it appeares that the sd. James Fell< no role > & this servants or Turnkeys
& severall prisoners under his custody have comitted great misdemeanors
upon severall poor prisoners for debt remaining in the sd. Goal & greatly
oppressed them, Forasmuch as it appeares to this Court that the misdemeanor
menconed in the sd. report & affidts. were comitted within the sd. Goal
City of London and are fit to be speedily redressed It is thought fit and
Ordered by this Court that the Justices of the peace above named be and
they are hereby desired to attend the right honble. the Lord Mayor.
Aldermen & Sherriffes of London with a coppy of the sd. report & the
severall affidts. by them taken touching the sd. misdemeanors, and to
desire that the same may be speedily redressed.
