The Information of John Makin< no role > Apprentice to Mr.
Roger Shuttleworth< no role > of Oxford Street in the Parish of St.
Mary le bone in the County of Middx. Apholsterer and
Cobinet Maker taken upon Oath before me of his
Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the Said County
this Day being Saturday the 7th March 1767

This Informant being his Oath as aforesaid (He being aged near 20th
Year And Well Knowing the notice of an Oath) declareth and Salth that one [..]
Wednesday last the 4th Inst. about a Quarter before Eight o'Clock he this Informant was Coming
along Partland Sheet by the House of Mr John Pittaway< no role > a Grocer who lives in Portland Sheet at
the Covner of Queen Anne Sheet Where he this Informat Saw a Man Standing at Mr.
Pittaway's Door which goes up steps And there was a dirty looking Boy Stood at the Corner
of Queen ann Street in Portland Sheet at the End of Mr. Pittaway's Shop Window. This Informant
Says he himself [..] turned round Portland Sheet to go into Queen Anne Sheet being in his
way to one Mr. Roebuck's a Relations House. This Information upon his Said Oath that
he had a Suspicion of the Man's having no good design (but the Contrary) As Mr Pittaway's
Shop had no Body in it ford he then Saw Mr. Pittaway down below Stairs in his own Area with a
Candle lighted in One Hand and An Iron Curtain red in the other Hand, And Mr. Pittaway's
Shop has two fronts to it, the one in Portland Sheet and the in Queen Sheet, So that
the Informant John Makin< no role > got upon Some steps in Queen Ann Sheet where he readily and
distinetely Saw; The Man before mentioned take Two halves of Choose at two Separte
times out of the Shop and delivered them to the Said dirty looking Boy who task them and
was discovering this Information the Boy [..] turned towards Queen Ann Sheet but on the Boy's Seeing
and discovering this Informant the Boy [..] turned [..] about a Contrary way towards Portland Sheet
This Informant Says there was at this time another Dirty looking Boy dressed in a Blue
Coat & a flapped that Standing within 5 or 6 yards of the Corner of Mr. Haways Shop at
that Corner of it that is in Queen Ann Sheet Wherupon this Information can Immediately
up to him and acquainted them with the whole Matter desiring time to Corne along with this
Informant and assist turn in taking them, The Boy Seemed in very are to & sudden Surprize and flutter and instead of
Assisting ran away a direct Contrary Way. This Information Says he ran immediately into Mr.
Pittaway's Shop to acquaint him of it who was just come up out of the Kitchen and
this Informant asked himself If he had Missed anything, Mr. Pittaway's Answer was he did not
Know. This Information then told him what had happened, Whereupon Mr. Pittaway Examined
& looked owned about his Shop and very Soon after told this Informant That he Missed Two takes
of Cheshire Cheele & likewise Said he believed there was Some Gloucester Cheese gone, but he
cou'd not tell the Quantity (or Exressed himself in Words to that Effect) Mr. Pittaway then
asked this Information which way the Robbers went, Who told him He thought they went
up Queen Ann Street , according Mr. Rittaway & this Informant set out after them but cou'd
not meet with them This Information describes the Man Robbers dress who took the Cheese in the following Manner.
a Jockey Cap. a Woolen Cap. In his Waistcoat (which had Sleeves to it) but without any Coat, and his
Waistcoat was Red.And an Old Apron tied round his BodyThat this Information upon
his Oath saith he has seen the Said Man Several times before this Robbery, and once Since, And
he well Knows his person, And believes him to be a Lamp Lighter. But he Personally very
well Knows the Said Man Robbers Person, Whereever, and Where ever he sees him.
