January 1798.

The Governor produced to this Committee near 400lb.
Weight of Thread spun by the Female Prisoners and stated
that he is preparing a Quantity of Thread for the use of
Shoemakers which may be sold to good Advantage and
also a Quantity of Flax for what is called colouring Shoes
which is worth 4sh. P. lb and the other Thread 2sh. P. lb. when
wrought whereupon it was Ordered that all the Women
that can spin be employed in this work.

The next Meeting was held on Monday the 6th. day
of November 1797.

The Chaplain requested that the Morning Service might
be performed on Sunday at 2' after 10 instead of 11 alledging
that this alteration would enable him to perform other
Duty to which the Committee agreed he requested a few
Books which were Granted for the use of the Prisoners

The Number of Prisoners 219. Vizt. 179 Men and 40.
Women including 42. Mutineers

The Surgeon reported that there are 3 Prisoners in the
Infirmary Brady with a sore Leg and 2 others and that
he has 24 or 25 Veneral Patients.

The Governor Reported that since the last Meeting
the Shed for drying Oakum had taken Fire; whether
from accident or Design he cannot yet learn but that
it was happily extinguished by the activity of his
Servants and some of the Prisoners without much
Damage much less than could be reasonably supposed
Ordered that the shed be immediately repaired under
the Direction of Mr.. Brayne.

This is now doing and great Improvements making
by the Prisoners who are Carpenters at no other expence
than the rough Timber and to the great future emolu-
-ment of the County.

The Governor Reported that the White Washing of
the Prison was nearly completed at the Expence of less
than £5 which Work in the Year 1796. cost the County
£102..8s..2½d
