February 1790

"goodness to deliver them to the Chairman and acting
"Magistrates at the next General Quarter Sessions for their
"inspection.

"At the same time the Society cannot help expressing
"a wish that the Tract abovementioned, which has been thought
"well calculated for the ends of public utility, may receive the
"countenance and approbation of the Magistracy at large, and
"that under the sanction of their recommendation, it may find
"it's way into the several Parishes, Townships and Vills of their
"respective Counties, I am,

"Sir,
"Your humble Servant.
"Montagu."

"P. S. You are requested to deliver a Copy of the Pamphlet
"relative to Prisons to such of the Gentlemen who compose
"the Grand Jury at the ensuing Assizes, as have not already
"received them.

Ordered that the following Answer be sent thereto
by the Clerk of the Peace Vizt.

"Session House Middlesex
"25th Febry 1790.

My Lord Duke.

I am directed by the Chairman of the Sessions and
by the Magistrates of this county assembled in their General
Sessions to acknowledge the Receipts of Twenty Copies of a Tract
entitled" The Duty of Constables." and to return their Thanks to
the Society of which Your Grace is President for this additional
instance of its attention to the preservation of good Order and
the Security of the public peace.

The Magistrates have too long found reason to
complain that the Laws have lost their proper energy and
effect, thro' the want of better information or more diligent
execution in their subordinate Officers, they therefore thankfully
accept a publication which appears calculated to obviate the
mischievous consequences of both and will use their endeavours.
