Rogues & Vagabonds</note>
Whereas by an Act of Parliament made in the Seventeenth Year of his present<lb></lb>
<rs type="placeName" id="LMSMGO55603_geo1139">Majesty'</rs>
<interp inst="LMSMGO55603_geo1139" type="placeName" value="Majesty'"></interp>
<interp inst="LMSMGO55603_geo1139" type="type" value="undefined"></interp>
s reign commonly called the Vagrant Act among other things It is Enacted<lb></lb>
That all Persons going about as Patent Gatherers or Gatherers of Alms under pretence<lb></lb>
of Less by Fire or other Casually or as Collectors for Prisons Goals or Hospitals and all<lb></lb>
Persons wandering abroad and lodging in Alehouses Barns Outhouses or in the open<lb></lb>
Air not giving a good Account of themselves and all other Persons wandering abroad<lb></lb>
and begging shall be deemed Rogues and Vagabonds within the true intent and meaning<lb></lb>
of the said Act and all Persons who after having been punished as Rogues and Vagabonds<lb></lb>
and discharged shall again commit any of the said Offences shall be deemed<lb></lb>
incorrigible Rogues.</p>
<p n="712">That when any Rogues or Vagabonds are apprehended and brought before any<lb></lb>
Justice such Justice is required to order all such Persons to be publickly whipt by the<lb></lb>
Constable or to send such Offenders to the <rs type="placeName" id="LMSMGO55603_geo1140">House of Correction</rs>

<interp inst="LMSMGO55603_geo1140" type="type" value="undefined"></interp>
untill the next Sessions<lb></lb>
or lesser time and if the Justice at such Sessions shall adjudge such Persons Rogues<lb></lb>
and Vagabonds or incorrigible Rogues they may order such Rogues and Vagabonds<lb></lb>
to be kept to hard labour for any time not exceeding Six Months and such incorrigible<lb></lb>
Rogues for any times not exceeding two years nor less than Six Months and during<lb></lb>
the time of such Persons confinement to be corrected by whipping in such manner<lb></lb>
and at such times and places as the Court shall think fit and in Case any incorrigible<lb></lb>
Rogue shall offend again he shall be deemed guilty of Felony and Transported<lb></lb>
for any time not exceeding seven years</p>
<p n="713">That if any Person shall knowingly permit any Rogue Vagabond or incorrigible<lb></lb>
Rogue to lodge or take shelter in his or her House Barn or other Building<lb></lb>
and shall not apprehend and carry them before some Justice of the Peace such<lb></lb>
Persons shall forfeit any Sum not exceeding Forty nor less than ten Shillings and<lb></lb>
in Case any Constable or other Person directed to put the said Act in Execution shall<lb></lb>
be remiss or negligent in his or their Duty or in Case any Person or Persons shall<lb></lb>
disturb or hinder the Execution of the said Act such Persons shall forfeit and<lb></lb>
pay upon Conviction any Sum not Exceeding five pounds nor less than ten<lb></lb>
Shillings or be committed to the House of Correction for any time not exceeding<lb></lb>
two Months</p>
<p n="714">That if any Person shall be found offending against the said Act it shall be lawfull for<lb></lb>
any Person to apprehend such Offenders and to convey them to some Justice of the<lb></lb>
Peace and such Justice of the Peace is impowered by the said Act to order a Reward<lb></lb>
of ten Shillings to the Apprehender.</p>
<p n="715">And that all Persons begging in the Parishes or Places where they dwell are deemed<lb></lb>
by the said Act idle and disorderly persons and are on Conviction to be committed to the<lb></lb>

Month and the Justice of Peace is by the said Act impowered to order payment of<lb></lb>
the Sum of five Shillings to the Person who shall apprehend such Offenders to be<lb></lb>
paid by the Overseers of the said Parish.</p>
