Hugh Mc Cannon< no role > , and Alexander Nairne< no role > taken
before me this 28th. day of October 1784

Who being on Oath say and first the said James Barber< no role > says that
he is a Watchman of the Parish of Saint James, That on Monday morning
last the 25th. Instant a little past 3 o'Clock on his going up Union Court in the
Hay market , he fond the Yard door of William Brown< no role > 's House open that
on his attempting [..] said Yard two persons now present who call
themselves Samuel Gilbert< no role > and William Steward< no role > Rushed out of said Yard
and made a Blow at him and ran away, that Informant gave an Alarm
and pursued them until said Steward was taken, And the said John Burney< no role >
says that he is a Watchman in the Hay Market that on hearing the Alarm
he saw three Men run out of Union Court aforesaid that he pursued one of
said Men and caught hold of him but he broke loose from him and ran
up little Suffolk Street , And this Informant further says that a Person now
present who calls himself John Hughes< no role > in one of said three Men that
came out of Union Court and the Man that escaped from him, And the
said Richard Dorrington< no role > says that he is one of the Patroles of the Parish
of Saint Martin in the fields. That on Monday morning last [..] a little
past 3 o'Clock as he was in little Suffolk Street leading towards the Hay Market
he heard an Alarm and saw said Hughes running that he pursued him down
great Suffolk Street to the bottom of Saint Martins Lane where he secured
said Hughes and took him to the Watchhouse That on searching him he found
a Quantity of pick lock keys insaid Hugheshis breeches, And this Informant
furthers says that on searching said Steward in the Watchhouse he found in
his Pocket a piece of Wax light now produced, That after said Gilbert, Steward< no role > ,
and Hughes were secured he went to said William Brown< no role > 's Yard were he
found an Iron Crow and a knife. And the said Daniel Mr. Kenzie
says that he is a Patrole [..] of Saint Martin in fields that he was in Company
with said Dorrington and pursued said Hughes until he was apprehended
that he saw Hughes threw away some thing in Suffolk Street , That after
Hughes was in Custody Informant saw him throw a Quantity of Picklock Hays
[..] into the Area of the Watch house. And this Informant further says
that on Returning into Suffolk Street he found a Dark Lanthorn, and a
brickle now produced which buckle said Hughes said was his property.
And the said Joel Peck< no role > says that he is a Patrole of te Parish of Saint
Martin in the fields that on Monday morning last a little past 3 o'Clock [..]
being near Charing Crop he heard the Cry of "Stop Thief," that he saw said Steward
