The Information of James Miles< no role > taken before me this
22nd. day of October 1773.

Who being upon Oath says that he knows Stephen Smith< no role > and Robert Palmer< no role >
now present, Says that sometime ago this Informant was confined in the
New Goal Sounthwark for debt where one Hanleton and his two sons were also
confined that daring the time they were there Confined a Quantity of Bad Silver
was brought in that sometime after they were Discharged this Informant
being at Old Hartetons house who then lived at Sutton, the said Harleton
in Conversation told this Informant that the said Stephen Smith< no role > could help
this Informant to same Counterfeit Silver if he wanted any, that this Informant
accordingly applied to the said Smith, telling him he was recommended to him
by the said Harleton; that the said Smith fold to this Informant at this time Several bad Shillings
and Sixpences at the Rate of twenty seven Shillings for One Guinea
that the said Smith cautioned this Informant to be careful how he uttered
them and always to preserve a good Shilling in his Pocket in case them
should be refused and told this Informant that if he was detected the
Punishment was only Six Months Imprisonment, and in that case the
said Smith told him he would allow him a Guinea Pr week while
under Confinement Says the said Smith has told him that he always worked
in his Cellar and always kept several good Shillings by him as Patterns.
Says the said Stephen Smith< no role > hath at several times sold to this Informant
Quantities of Counterfeit Silver viz Shillings and Sixpences at the Rate
of Twenty eight Shillings for one Guinea; Particularly on Thursday last at the

Counterfeit Shillings for half a Guinea. Says the said Smith the same day
sold this Informant fourteen Shillings Worth more at the same Rate which
he sent his wife for Says that sometime last Summer the said Robert
Palmer
< no role > sold this Informant fifteen Counterfeit Shillings for half a
Gumea. Says that those he had from Palmer had not so good an
Appearance as those he had from Smith
