<p n="2837">Upon Reading the Humble Petition of the Inhabitants of <rs type="placeName" id="BBBRMG20208_geo1738">Bridewell<lb></lb>
Precinct</rs>

Setting forth That in the Year 1701 when £24 was first allowed<lb></lb>
by the <rs type="occupation" id="BBBRMG20208_occ5142">governors</rs>
<interp inst="BBBRMG20208_occ5142" type="occupation" value="governors"></interp>
towards defraying the Expences of the Poor of the Hospital &<lb></lb>
Precinct the whole Annual Expences did not Exceed £66 since which time it<lb></lb>
has annually increased in somuch that the last Years Expences amounted to<lb></lb>
to £44 & aftwards and will for this Year be considerably more occasioned<lb></lb>
not only by Increase of Poor but by the Number of Premises Appertaining to the Hospitals<lb></lb>
which are Uninhabited and others that have lately been pulled down so that out<lb></lb>
of £50 Houses which formerly paid to the poor there are this Time only Thirty<lb></lb>
There is also a Considereable Docrease in the New River Office Payment, it being hereto fore<lb></lb>
charged with £16..12..P Annum Poors Rate and will now only pay the Sum<lb></lb>
of £8 P Annum. A further Decrease arises from the Decease of Artsmasters<lb></lb>
in the Hospital there being now only 12 remaining out of 18 That out of the Number of<lb></lb>
Poor Chargeable upon the Pets there are 11 who claim it from Servitude in the Precinct<lb></lb>
&7 from the Hospital. That the £24 when first allowed was nearly one third of the<lb></lb>
then Expences and that £50 will now bear only a like proportion to the Present Expences<lb></lb>
which the Petrs. humbly requested to be allowed It is Ordered that the Steward of<lb></lb>
this Hospital do pay unto <rs type="persName" id="BBBRMG20208_n2837-1">John Packer</rs>
