Examination TextThe Examination of William Bailey in the workhouse of and in the Parish of St Martin in the Fields passed from the Parish of St Giles in the Fields in the County of Middlesex taken this 12th Day of March 1777. This this Examinant on his oath saith that he is 46 years of age and upwards, that he was bound an apprentice by an indenture for seven years to his Father William Bailey, a musical instrument maker, at Taunton in the County of Somerset and there served his said master for the space of three years and an half, and then his master removed to Salisbury Court in Fleet Street in the Parish of St Bride vulgarly St Bridget [sic] in the city of London and this Examinant about a year after his said Master came to Salisbury Court came also to Salisbury Court and there served his said [master] about two years, and then his said Master removed to the corner of Castle Court in the Strand in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields and this Examinant along with him and there served his said Master about one year and an half the remainder of the said apprenticeship, [scored through: 'and then was a yearly hired servant to his said Master at a house known by the description of the Arts and [blank] near Denmark Court in the said Parish of St Martin in the Fields for the space of 20 months at the yearly wages of 20 pounds diet and lodging, and then his said Master died in the said house'], that he this Examinant never kept house rented a tenement of 10 pounds by the year paid any parish taxes nor been yearly hired servant in any one place for 12 months together since the expiration of his said apprenticeship, that he this Examinant was married his present wife Lucy at the Parish Church of St Margaret in the City of Westminster about the 23rd or 25th of September in 1769, by whom he hath three children to wit Mary aged six years and upwards, William aged two years and upwards and Grace aged six weeks all now with this Examinant. Sworn the 12th of March 1777 before Sampson Wright.
