Windermere Lake which Supplies the Mills
the business that is carried on there is Carding
Roving and Spinning of Cotton little Weaving of
Callico Clockmaking Blacksmiths Work and
Joiners The Family Amount to 210 of Boys and
Girls in the Houses from the Age of 8 to 21 Boys
122 Girls 88 about 100 of the Inhabitants round
about are employed in the Mills their Hours
of Work are from Six to Seven Summer and
Winter half an hour is allowed for Breakfast
the same at Dinner Every Evening from 8 to 9
except Saturday they are taught to Read and Write
by a Gentleman intended for the Church who is
instructing Mr. Barkers one of the Partners Children
many of them write extremely well and some are
Accounptants as far as the Rule of Three whose
Books we examined They seem all in good
health with chearful countenance on Saturday
Evenings Mr. Robinson one of the Partners Treats
them with a Fidler who resides near and they
Dance he informs us he has Ordered a Hand Organ
for their Amusement at Twenty Guineas Price
which he expects soonOn Sunday Mornings they
go to Church to Finthswaite have Prayers Read at
home by the Gentlemen who Instructs Mr. Barker
family Prayers are Read in Afternoon afterwards
they Attend the Sunday School if ill they are apart
from the others Mr. John Gardner< no role > Surgeon
Attends at a Salary of £20 Per Annum the
Rooms they Sleep in are Large well vantilated
with Windows all Round about 14 or 15 Beds in
each Room remarkable clean and neat but no
Sheets
