Informations taken his fourteenth
day of October 1782 at the Parish of St. Margt.
within the Liberty of Westmr in the County of
Midex upon an Inquisition touching the death
of James Holt< no role > lying dead in the said Parish
Liberty and County.

George Downes< no role > a Soldier in the Second Battalion of
the First Regt. of Guards on his Oath saith That he
is a Lodger at Mr. Joseph Mabley< no role > in New Tothill
Street in the Parish of St. Margaret Westmr . and
was in Bed and asleep last Night between
Ten and Eleven o'Clock, when he was awaked
with the Report of a Gun fired in his Room
Says that the Room was Dark that he got up
and hallow'd out to Mr. Mabley to bring up
a Light, upon which one Kelly brought up
a Light, when he saw James Holt< no role > the Deced,
(who was a Soldier in the first Battallion of
the Second Regiment of Guards, and lodged
in the same Room with Dept.) lying on his
Back on another Bed there having a Gun or Musket
in his right Hand and the Muzzle on his [..] towards
this Head Says that the Deced Rad on the right
Side of his Head, that a Musket Ball had passed
through his Head, and a queat Quantity of Blood
upon the Bed Cloaths, and believes that the Deced
shot himself, there being no other Person in
the Room when the Light was brought nor did
he hear any body move there, Says that the
Deced groaned three times very farntly and
then died without speaking Says that there
was a piece of List tied to the Trigger of the
Gun and about the Deced's left Foot. Says that
he found a Paper in the Room this Morning in the
words and Figures Following, Vizt. The Instigation
of this unhappy affair merely the ill usage by
William Stevens< no role > Serjeant of the Second Company
James Holt< no role > Sufferer
