This Morning April 1 1798 on unlocking the Prisoners in the House of
of Correction for the County of Middlesex , a Turnkey of the name of
Samuel Russel< no role > having the Care of the Mutineers going to unlock them
to serve their Bread at the usual time 6 o'Clock in the Morning, On
opening the Door of the Yard saw some Jacket Trowsers Shirts and
Stockings allowed by the County, and perceiveing some of the Prisoners
had mad their Escape by the Cells Doors being open, immediately
proceeded to the Governor who came Instantly down, and or examine-
ing the Yard found that seven Prisoners Viz George Gainer< no role > , John
Davies
< no role > , Abraham Nelson< no role > , William Hooper< no role > , John Griffiths< no role >
John Wells< no role > and James Jones< no role > , had made their Escape, the Lock of
the Cell Doors being all wrenched off except John Davis< no role > 's Cell, and it
appears to have been done with an hold fast taken from the case of the
Water Closet in Gainer's Cells, and by a deception which Davis made
use of by taking his Cloths of laying them on the Bed with his Night
Cap stuffed full of Oakum on the Pillow his shoes by the Bed side and to
all appearance to the Man who had the care of them to lock them up
to be in Bed, (which now remains to be sun) their is every reason to beleive
he concealed himself in the Privy their being no other place where he could secret
himself The Governer on examineing futher found they had by the
