Middlesex


At the General Quarter Session of the Peace of our
Lord the King Holden in and for the County of
Middlesex at the Session House for the said County
(by adjournment) on Thursday the Twenty third day
of June in the Thirty sixth year of the Reign of
our Sovereign Lord George the third King of Great
Britain Etc.

Whereas William Palmer< no role > Hath at this present Session Exhibited
his petition and Appeal setting forth That by Indentures of Apprenticeship bearing
Date the 9th. Day of August 1793 The Petitioner was bound Apprentice for
seven years to John Stephens< no role > of Streatham Street in the Parish of St. George
Bloomsbury in the County of Middlesex Plater and Founder and in Consideration
of £20. paid to him by the Petitioners Father he Covenanted to teach and
instruct the Petitioner in the Act of a Plater and Founder which he followed
as by the said Indenture would appear. That the said John Stephens< no role > had divers
times behaved towards the Petitioner with great Cruelty by violently Assaulting
and Beating him without any just Cause and otherwise ill treated him by
refusing an neglecting to find and provide him with necessary Food and by
neglecting to teach him his Trade. That the said John Stephens< no role > having on the
20th. Day of June Instant violently and maliciously Assaulted Beat and Bruised
the Petitioner in and upon his Head Neck Shoulders and divers parts of his Body
with a Stick without any cause or provocation whatsoever on the Petitioners past
The petitioner applied to Nicholas Bond< no role > Esquire one of his Majesty's Justices of
the peace for the County of Middlesex for Protection who thereupon caused the said
John Stephens< no role > to come before him to answer the said Complaint and upon
hearing the said Complaint the said Justice ordered and directed the said John
Stephens
< no role > to find Sureties to answer the same at the present Session and advise
the Petitioner to apply to your Worships for Redress and directed the Petitioner
Father to take him under his protection until the hearing and determining
of the said Complaint whereby the petitioner conceived himself aggrieved and
prayed to be discharged from his said Apprenticeship Whereupon at the request of
the said Petitioner It is Ordered that the Benefit of his said Appeal should be saved
unto him and the hearing and determining thereof be and the same is hereby
Adjourned until the next General Session of the peace to be holden for his County
