Middlesex


At the General Quarter Session of the peace of our
Lord the King holden in and for the County of
Middlesex at the Session House for the said County
(by adjournment) on Thursday the Second day of July
in the Thirty fifth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign
Lord George the third King of Great Britain Etc.

Whereas John Mackaness< no role > of Garsington in the County of Oxford Gentleman
Overseer of the poor of the Parish of Garsington Hath at this present Session
Exhibited his petition and appeal setting forth That by an Order dated the 2d.
day of May last under the Hands and Seals of the Revd. Joseph Chapman< no role >
Doctor in Divinity and The Revd. John Cooke< no role > Doctor in Divinity two of His
Majestys Justices of the Peace in and for the County of Oxford upon the Oath
of Thomas Harpin< no role > of the Parish of Garsington aforesaid that he was poor
and impotent and not able to work and that he had applied to the
parishioners of the said parish or to the Overseers of the poor of the said
parish for relief but had been refused. That the petitioner had been summoned
before the said Justices to shew cause why such relief should not be given but
had not made any sufficient cause appear The said Justices therefore
ordered the Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the said Parish to
enter the said Thomas Harpur< no role > in the Book or Books kept by the said
Parish as one of those who was to receive Collection and to pay unto the said
Thomas Harpur< no role > the Weekly Sum of Two Shillings and six pence towards
his maintenance as long as the cause for such relief continued or until
they should be ordered according to Law to forbear the said allowance
and that the petitioner had accordingly paid the said Thomas Harpur< no role >
such weekly Allowance in pursuance of the said Order: That Elizabeth
Coxhead of the Parish of Ealing in the County of Middlesex Widow was the
Daughter of the said Thomas Harpur< no role > and the said Elizabeth Coxhead< no role > being
an Inn keeper and in very afflicent circumstances and able to afford
assistance to her aged and infirm Father and to prevent his receiving
relief from or being a burthen upon the said Parish. The Petitioner had
frequently applied to the said Elizabeth Coxhead to repay him what he had
expended and paid as Oveseer aforesaid to the said Thomas Harpur< no role > or on
his Account and to provide for the said Thomas Harper< no role > as he was required
to do by Law but that the said Elizabeth. Coxhead had refused so to do
whereby the petitioner conceived himself aggrieved and therefore praying
