Mr. Thomas ( [..] of the Land tax of St. James's Parish ,) reced all.
Jefferson's message this Morning, and in Answer there to, acquaints him, that
it is not in his Power to deliver a Copy of the Land tax assessmts. for the Year
1767, as Mr. Thomas was not appointed, Clerk until the 13th. May 1768, which was
after all appeals of the preceding Year 1767, were heard & determined; And
as Mr. Thomas never was possissed of any Duplicates or Copies of the Land
tax assessmt. in St. James's Parish for the sd. Year 1767, it is totally out of his
Power to comply with the Notice, by delivering in the same to the Clerk of the
Peace , or his Deputy.And further as Mr. Thomas apprehends that the
reason why the said Land Tax assessments are called for at this time is with
an intent to shew who are Freeholders & hav a right to Vote for a Knight of he Shire for
Middx, Mr. Thomas begs leave to premise for Mt. Jefferson's Information [..]
