Richard Carey< no role > of the Parish of St: George Hanover Square in
the County of Middlesex Mariner and Eleanor< no role > his Wife

16. Jary 1767


Petn. States that Petr: was on the 16th Janry: 1767 bound to sd: Richd Carey< no role > & Eleanor his Wife to Learn
the Art & Trade of a Milliner which the said Eleanor then used & with them after the Manner of an apprentice
to Dwell & Serve for the Term of Five years & That £20. was given as on Apprentice Fee with Petr.

That Petr. Father having lately discovered that sd Mr Carey & Wife are Roman Catholicks is very
desirous that Petr: shod be discharged from her apprenticeship

That Petr: hath been frequently sent out on Errands late at Nights where by she was Exposed to
the Several Accidents that happen in the Streets

That Petr: hath been ill used & Corrected beyond the Measure of any Indiscretion she was Guilty of

Covertion


That Petrs: Mistress having at one time Alledged that she had last two Guineas taxed Petr: with having
taken them & upon Petrs: denying it her Mistress wanted her to go before a Magistrate & Confess she had
taken them to prevent as she said Petrs: being Committed.

For the above reasons Petr prays that she may be discharged from
her sd Apprenticeship and that the Court wod make such further
Oreder in the premisses as shod seem Inst.

First Order for hearing for 19th May Adjourned to 7th July further adjd: to 8th Septr:

The Indre is Admitted to be dated as in Petn: & in the Comon form but as the binding is but for Five Years
It's Apprehended that it is not Srech a binding as is directed by the 5th of Elizth which ought to be for 7 years so
that this binding may be Considered only as a Private agreement between the Parties And if it sho'd be
so Considered then it's Apprehended that the Court have not a Power to hear or determine any thing Concerning
it But if the Court shod be of opinion that they have a power to hear & determine it We Answer the Several
Charges in the Petition as follows

As to the Religion it's admitted to be as in Petn: But it Certainly must have been known to both
the Appr & her father before the appr was bound for that she was Six weeks on liking before binding and
Consequently must know in that time what Religion her master & Mistress were and when the appr
first came on liking her father asked Mrs Carey if the appr was to go to Church with her Mrs Carey Answered
[..] to Church with her but she wo'd take Care that the appr sho'd have her proper times to go [..]
