The prease Time of [..] when Newgate was originall
built does not appear, but according to Stowe who
was a loborious Antiquary, an Author of unquestioned
per a city a Citizen of London
, and so for a Friend to
the City that he has beenaskedreproached with
thebeingthe cityits Feed Chronicler it was
built in the Reign of Hen. 1 or Stephen Vizt. between
Now. & 1154. The walls aresupposedof still greater
Antiquity for Fitz Stephen whohadwrote in the
Time of Hen. It Speaks of them as having existed
wag before his Time V. Strype pr. 1 pa 9 & 18.
By a Charter of 4th. Edwd I Anno 1276 which
Strype the Continuator of Stowe says he red in
the Records of the Chamber of London the King
grants to the Citizen of London
for 3 Years certain Custony
on venable Commodities therein mentioned which
because they were appropriated for repairing
the Walls obtained the Name of Murage and this [..]
Tax was renewed and [..] timed by divers by subsequent Charters.
