to be taken in respect of Ground to rebuild the Gaol They proposed purchasing ground at their own Expenceand
had Plans delivered for that purpose in which it was proposed to
have one Quadrangle for Debtors, and another
for Felons with an Area to each and having
Considered of the Expence which was Estimated
at about £40,000 and being Convinced of
the Utility of the Measure, did resolve to
apply to Parliament for a Sum to be given
out of the Publick Supplies but on applying
to the Chancellor of the Exchequer they were
Informed no Publick Money would be Spared
upon which the Application Drop't.

That the City have reserved some Ground
between Newgate and the Sessions House &
the Sessions House and Surgeons Hall for
the Purpose of Rebuilding, but that he is sure
there is no Appropriation of any Fund or
Estate belonging to the City for rebuilding or
enlarging the Gaol of Newgate -That

Being asked out of what fund the
Money which had been applyed in
Reparing Newgate Came he answd.
out of the genl find of the City
being Further askd whether he
knew that at any time a Single
Shilling was applied out of the Sheriffs
fines for those purposes he answd
he believed there had been none

Being further askd who [..] to repair
Lugate he answd. The City and being
asked whether there was [..]
fund appropriated to rebuild in
repair the Gaol of Ludgate he
answd. he believed [..] but sayd
that in 1733. a large Sum was layd
out in reparing Ludgate at the
Cities Expence 59. minutes.
