October 1795

The Court having proceeded to the Election of Chaplain to the New
House of Correction for this County It was Resolved that the Salary for
such Office be Fifty Pounds per Annum and that the Candidates be informed
that it will be their duty to officiate in the House of Correction and to assist
The Reverend Mr Richards occasionally in case of indisposition on otherwise in
New Prison ; When the following Gentlemen being apprized by the Court of the
above circumstances offered themselves as Candidates Vizt.

The Reverend John Evans< no role >
The Reverend William Hayden< no role > .
The Reverend William L. Fancourt< no role > .
The Reverend Edward Lawyer< no role > .

And the Court having proceeded to the Election upon casting up the
number of Votes it appeared that The Reverend John Evans< no role > was Elected by
a very great Majority, who being called in was acquainted with his Election
And the several Gentlemen who had been the unsuccessful Candidates
having officiated in the House of Correction during the time of their Probation
Ordered that the Sum of Eight Guineas be paid to The Revd William Haydon< no role >
The Sum of Two Guineas to The Revd. William L. Fancourt< no role > , and the Sum of Two
Guineas to The Reverend Edward Lawyer< no role > and that an Order do issue for the
County Treasurer to pay the same accordingly.

By Adjournment same day.

It being stated to the Court that John Osborne< no role > the Person
heretofore appointed to attend the Bench and preserve good Order and Decorum
in the Court was lately dead. Resolved that The Chairman be requested
to appoint a proper Person to attend in the place of the said John Osborn< no role > .

The following Letter from The Marquiss of Titchfield Lord Lieutenant
and Custos Rotulorum of this County inclosing a circular Letter from His Graces
The Duke of Portland one of His Majestys Principal Secretaries of State being
laid before this Court and Read Vizt.

"London October 30th. 1795

"Sir,

I have received the enclosed Letter from The Duke of
Portland .

I transmit it to you Sir, in order that you may take such
