That the making the Alterations in the present Bridge to answer
the purposes of their Canal would not exceed £200 exclusive of the
Temporary Bridge.
That the Alteration for the purposes of the Navigation might be made
by raising the center Arch of the Bridge
Two feet higher then it now is (i,e.)
That the Pavement need only be raised Two feet higher than it is at present
over the Center Arch.
That he thought the Canal Company ought not to give more than
£800 towards rebuilding the Bridge
because they would not be obliged to lay
out above £200 but that the setting the Bridge
in another direction would
make it rather more commodious to the Navigation and therefore it might be
advisable to pay so much more in addition to addition that object.
In answer to the Question, How many feet do you propose your
Descent to go, to come down from the center of the Bridge
? He said, the
distance would not be many feet as he thought 21 Inches would be all in
strictness that it would be necessary to raise the Center Arch; After some
conference with your Committee, the Committee of the Grand Junction Canal
Company retired to consider further of a Proposal to make to the County
respecting the Bridge
and being returned Mr Clitherow produced and read the
two Paper writings annexed marked A and B. a Copy of Which your
Committee have inserted in their Report Vizt.
"The Committee of the Grand Junction Canal
Company propose to the
Committee of the Magistrates of the County of Middlesex
to remove the
present Bridge at Brentford
and build a new one in a straight direction
according to the Plan this day produced with a Brick Arch of 40 feet space
& to purchase the Buildings and Land necessary provided the County and
the Trustees of the Turnpike Road will advance towards the same the Sum of
£2500 and the Work can be proceeded upon in the course of the year 1795.
And Mr Clitherow engaged as Treasurer
of the Brentford
Turnpike
to call a special Meeting of the Trustees previous to the next County
Sessions and propose to them to cooperate with the Magistrates and the
Proprietors of the Canal Company according to the Proposal this day made
by the said Proprietors by advancing the Sum of £1250 and to enable them
