Mr Wegg agrees with me in thinking if a Committee of
Magistrates cd. be appointed to meet a Committee of the Canal
Company when Mr Jessop is in Town for without him such
Meeting wd. be nugatory, it may bring the matter to a decisive
determination.

Sir,

I am sorry I was from home when you favoured me
with a Call, but your Letter met me Yesterday in London

The Expence of raising the Arch, making a temporary
Bridge and securing the foundation of the Piers having no object in
view but the Accommodation to the Canal would cost much less to
the Canal Company than you would probably suppose: We have
Centers already made that with little alteration would suit for the
New Arch, the Materials for the temporary Bridge which would be
in use but a few Weeks would all be converted without much loss
to other purposes on the Canal and the foundation of the present
Piers, which are very little above the bottom when the River is
deepened, and without underpining be easily secured from any
possibility of Injury by a case of sheet Piling at the foot of each
Pier supported by Stretchers across the bottom of the River the whole
expence could not exceed £200 but I have reason to believe it
would be done for £150 As it is hardly probable that those
Gentlemen who have a Trust for the Public would lose the present
opportunity of making an Improvement in the Road over the
Bridge so evidently necessary and which could not be done hereafter
without a considerable encrease of Expence and without interrupting
the Navigation, the inconvenience of which can hardly be Estimated
I take it for granted that they will not hesitate on determining
that such an Alteration is highly expedient and that this is the
time for it: As the Expence will be the only obstable, you will not
