June 1785

The Clerk of the Peace having Read the Orders made on
the County day and on the adjournment day of the last Session
respectively relative to the manner of letting the Ground called the
Quakers Ground and also the Circular Letter and Advertisement
giving notice that in pursuance thereof "The Justices would on
"this day take into their Consideration in what manner the ground
"belonging to this County commonly called the Quakers Ground
"could be most properly disposed of for the Benefit of the County
"and also how far the Plans for a House of Correction for this
"County which lay in the Office of the Clerk of the Peace were
"proper for and could be adapted to the Ground on which the same
"was then intended to be built and would also determine upon
"such other matters as might be necessary to expedite the Building
the new House of Correction". And the Court being
informed that Messrs.being two of
the Persons called Quakers attended from their Body with
some Message which they wished to communicate to the Court,
they were Ordered to be called in When they informed the Court
that they attended for the purpose of delivering up the Key and
Possession of the Garden Ground in pursuance of their agree-
ment to such person as the Court should direct to receive the
same and to desire the Payment of the Sum of £400 agreed
to be paid to them on such possession of the Garden Ground being
delivered But that as to the other part of the Premises It
would be a very great accomodation to them if they could be
permitted to hold the same for Twelve Months longer as they
apprehended they would not before that time be enabled to
make their own building proper for the reception of their Poor

Resolved unanimously that the Key & Possession of
the Premises be delivered to the Clerk of the Peace for the use of
the County and that the Sum of £400 payable on the delivery
of the possession of the Garden Ground be immediately paid
