January 1785

By Adjournment same day

A Letter from Mr Hurst the person whose Plan of a House
of Correction obtained the first Premium being laid before the
Court of which the following is a Copy

"Manwaring Esqr.

"Sir

"Having obtained the first premium for a
"Design for a House of Correction for the County of Middlesex I
"shall esteem it a particular favour if you will present my most
"Grateful acknowledgments to the Gentlemen in the Commission
"who have Honoured me with so Flattering a decision As upon
"Enquiry I understand that the Gentlemen have appointed Jacob
Leroux
< no role > Esquire as their Architect for carrying their Designs
"into Execution I feel myself restrained from any application
"for that office which the decision in my favour might otherwise
"have Warranted. Having been much confined for time in forming
"my design. I was necessitated to deliver the Original Sketches, and
"precluded the possibility of retaining any Copy either of the Plans
"or Description should it therefore be Consonant with the indulgent
"of the Magistrates to grant me permission to obtain a Copy of them.
"I shall feel myself under an additional obligation to that already
"conferred on

"Sir
Your most Obedt & Humble Servt.
"A Hurst"
