Old Bailey
April 21st. 1787
.
To the Right Honourable the Lord
Mayor & Court of Aldermen of the
City of London
.
My Lord & Gentlemen We the Grand Jury of the City of London
Humbly Present this & Memorial with great concern; seeing the increasing
profanation of the Sabbath day, by great numbers of Shops being open and Fruit Stalls in various
parts of the City, also Numbers of Loaded Waggone Carts and Stages Coaches,
proceeding in their Usual Business as on other Days in the Week, To
the Encouragement of Vice and Immorality and consequently tending
to the Increase and Multiplying the Melancholy Business on which
they have been just engaged; they therefore hope that this Honourable Court
will take the Same into Consideration as their Wisdom shall think proper,
and take the proper Steps to Suppress so grawing and Evil.
