The Information of James Mathews< no role > , a Shopman
to Mr. Thomas Langdale< no role > of Holborn London Distiller who
being on Oath, saith that on Wednesday Se'night between the
Hours of three and four in the afternoon to the best of his recollection
as to the hour, there was a very great knocking at Mr Langdale's
Shop Door, upon which this Informant opened half of the door
and ask'd the people before the House what they wanted, [..]
[..] that Robert Smille< no role > the prisoner now under Examination
and another Man, whom this Informant does not know, put
each and Iron Rail which he had in his Hand across the door
in Order at this Informant believes to prevent the Mob from
crouding in, and then he ask'd the people what was their pleasure
some persons behind cried out I am informed there is a Chapel
in this House, this Informant assured them there was no
such thing, and addressing himself to their Prisoner Smille &
the other man said that if two or three of them those to go
in and satisfy themselves, they were welcome, that the
Prisoner , and the said other man (whom the Mob at the door
called Captain) went into Mr. Langdale's Shop , the prisoner
appeared [..] unwilling to proceed farther and cried out
to the Mob at the Door that he did not believe there was
any such thing in the House, that upon the two persons
be having with such Civility he this Informant ask'd them
to drink something, says that Smille did drink a little Rum or
Brandy, but he does not recollect whether the other man did or
not, after this the man call'd the Captain went out into the Street, and collected
money from persons passing by in Hackney Coaches, he this
Informant [..] also gave him a shilling, saying to him, my Lad,
as you have behaved civilly you will please to drink Mr.
Langdale's Health, when he this Informant return'd into the House where
Smille remained alone, he addressed himself to him [..]
(the said Smille taking [..] going about his Business) and
said he hoped that he, said Smille, would stay, and as he
seemed to have some Influence over the Mob, to endeavour
to keep the Mob from rushing into the House, adding that
if his Business was not very urgent, he this Informant would
make it worth his while to stay if it was even all Night, and
that he should be generously rewarded; says said Smille
seemed to hesitate a little, and said he would stay if it was in
his power, or words to that effect, says the Mob continued very
