Richard Colthirst< no role > of London Mariner late Master of the Ship or
Vessel called the William and John of Newcastle and George Nicholson< no role >
of London Mariner late Mate of the said Ship or Vessel severally make
Oath and say that on or about the third Day of December last past there
were shipped or loaded on Board the said Ship or Vessel One Thousand
Six Hundred Bushells of English White Salt at South Shields in the
Port of Newcastle by one Jasper Dixon< no role > of that Place as Agent for Mathew
Bell
< no role > of Newcastle Esquire in order to be conveyed by Sea to the port of London for and on Account of James Dixon< no role > of London
Merchant the Owner of the said Salt and that the Duty for the said Salt
had been paid to his Majesty And these Deponents further say that on
or about the twenty fourth Day of the same Month of December the said
Ship or Vessel with the said Salt on Board sailed out of the said Port
of Newcastle for the said Port of London and that on the Day following
in the Forenoon as they these Deponents were proseding on the said Voyage
the said Ship or Vessel being then off at Sea, a strong Gale of Wind
ar use and continued to blow very hard and beat large Quantities of
Water in upon the Deck of the said Ship whilst she lay to And that
these Deponents and all the Ships Crew continued on board using their
utmost Endeavours to save the said Ship and her Cargo till the Evening
of the same Day when these Deponents and the Rest of the Ships Crew
perceiving the said Ship or Vessel to be in Danger and their Lives [..] ing
Hazard by longer Continuance quitted her and by their Boat got into
another Ship And that about twelve of the Clock the same Night they
these Deponents left Sight of the said Ship on Vessel on which the said
Salt was loaded as aforesaid when they verily believe the some Ship or
Vessel sunk and perished of Sea on the Yorkshire Coast with all the said Salt on board her and
that they have never seen or heard of her since
